Gippsland Regional Facts

Location

The Gippsland region is located in the south-east of Victoria. It extends from the edge of Melbourne’s Metropolitan Region in the region’s west, eastwards to the New South Wales border, with the northern boundary formed by the edge of alpine country, with the coastline and Wilsons Promontory comprising its southern border. Gippsland includes the Bass Coast, Baw Baw, Casey, East Gippsland, South Gippsland, Wellington Shire Councils, Yarra Ranges, Latrobe City Council, and the Gourmet Deli Region.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics 2006 Census reported a population of 239,647 for Gippsland: 80,115 in East Gippsland, 52,377 in South Gippsland, 33,632 in West Gippsland, and 73,477 in the Latrobe Valley statistical divisions.

Around 1,699 Gippsland dairy farmers produce 1.9 billion litres of milk annually. This represents 33% of Victoria’s dairy production or 22% of national milk output.

The progressive nature of the region is reflected in its strong social infrastructure and thriving Community groups.

Climate

The weather in Gippsland is generally temperate, with patterns of precipitation and temperature influenced by geography, topography, altitude and proximity to the coast.
 

Tourism

Gippsland’s natural heritage places comprise of snow-fields, wilderness areas, rainforests, extensive lakes and beaches. Some of the State’s best land and marine parks are in the region such as the Alpine, Wilson’s Promontory, Tarra Bulga and Croajingalong National Parks.

Explore the Gippsland Lakes and soak up the sun on the beautiful Ninety Mile Beach. Visit the largest concentration of Open Cut Mining & Power Generation activity in Australia. Or Journey to Phillip Island and catch a glimpse of the unique penguin parade.

Food and Wine – places of interest:

Tarago River Cheese: based on free range farm with 400 cows, providing fresh milk and 99% of the ingredients used in their cheese.
